Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario: A Unique Train Lover's Experience (2026)

As a self-proclaimed rail enthusiast, I must admit that my recent adventure with my son Victor was an absolute delight. It's fascinating how a simple overnight stay in a railcar can spark such an engaging and unique experience.

The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario: A Train Lover's Paradise

The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario, located in Smiths Falls, Ontario, offers a truly special appeal for train enthusiasts. With its Airbnb-listed cabooses, visitors can step back in time and immerse themselves in railway history.

What makes this museum unique is its commitment to minimal restoration. The cabooses retain their original charm, allowing guests to imagine themselves as part of a bygone era.

A Journey to Smiths Falls

Our journey to Smiths Falls was an adventure in itself. We opted for a leisurely drive, taking in the scenic Highway 6 route through Lanark County. The small towns and farmland provided a picturesque backdrop to our trip.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly museum manager, Nate Flinn, who showed us to our accommodations - a 1921 Canadian National Railway caboose. The glossy orange paint and cozy single beds set the tone for our stay.

A Hands-on Experience

One of the highlights of our trip was the opportunity to operate a handcar. With Nate's guidance, Victor got a taste of what it's like to inspect tracks using this hand-pumped contraption. The experience was both fun and educational, offering a glimpse into the lives of railway workers.

Evening Entertainment

After a day of exploration, we retired to our caboose-hotel. The evening's entertainment consisted of a good book and the soothing sound of passing freight trains. Victor climbed into the cupola, a cozy turret offering a unique vantage point, while I read about the Kettle Valley Railway.

A Morning of Discovery

Waking up to birdsong, we stepped out into a marshland paradise, home to mallards and Canada geese. While Victor made friends with Monty, the station cat, I took a shower in the museum's facilities.

We then had the privilege of learning the art of telegraphy from volunteer Andrew Cameron. Victor even got to operate the massive levers used to crank up signals, a truly hands-on experience.

Exploring the Museum

The museum itself is a treasure trove of railway history. We were fortunate to have volunteer Gilbert Lacroix show us a detailed HO-scale model of the area around the Smiths Falls station in 1955. It was a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Museum president Tony Humphrey, a former Canadian Pacific engineer, guided us through an 1899 Wagner Palace Car. This impeccably restored dining car is a masterpiece of mahogany and velour, offering a glimpse into luxurious railway travel of the past.

A Satisfied Son

Although we didn't get to ride a locomotive, Victor was more than satisfied with our trip. He filled our camera with unique photos of various rolling-stock curiosities, which he later used for a school presentation.

Our accommodations received high praise from Victor, who ranked our stay as one of his top 10 sleeps ever.

More Railcar Sleepovers

For those inspired by our adventure, there are similar railcar sleepover experiences across Canada. From Ontario to Alberta and Nova Scotia, these unique accommodations offer a glimpse into railway history and a chance to create lasting memories.
